While New Mexico is not the highest risk area for asbestos exposure, several sites in our state have been identified as presenting health threats because of asbestos exposure. In addition to 4 sites of naturally occurring asbestos, New Mexico is also home to industries that have used asbestos extensively, including power plants (Four Corners Power Plant and the San Juan Powerhouse), oil refineries, construction sites, and even the Roswell Industrial Air Center.

Asbestos is a material used extensively in various industries because it is durable, insulating, and an excellent heat and fire resistant material. While it carries these material benefits, it is highly toxic and can produce fatal health complications.

Asbestos Exposure in New Mexico

Asbestos exposure occurs when materials containing this carcinogen are damaged in some way (then called friable asbestos) and become airborne. Once in the air, these invisible asbestos fibers can be inhaled or ingested. They can also settle on one’s clothing and brought home to loved ones who then also become exposed to this dangerous material.

Asbestos exposure can cause serious diseases, which often lie dormant for years or even decades before manifesting symptoms. Thus, someone may have been exposed 30 years ago and only now develop a serious illness.

It has been more than 40 years since the state legislature first set up this cancer center to serve the people of the state. The center has changed a lot since then but it has continued in its mission to offer the world’s best cancer care to anyone in the state that has been affected by cancer. In 2015, the center saw 10,000 patients from every county in the state. It treats 60% of the adults who have cancer in the state and most of its children.

The team of cancer experts here is the biggest in the state of New Mexico and has the most experienced. There are more than 130 oncologists here who are board certified and 130 cancer scientists who have been recruited from some of the top universities in America.

In 2005, this center first achieved its official designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center according to the National Cancer Institute. This designation was renewed in 2010 by a team of the country’s top cancer experts.

The center is now supported by $72 million in federal, state and private funds, which has led to groundbreaking clinical trials in women’s cancers and leukemia, as well as lung cancer.
