Hundreds of Kentucky residents have needlessly been exposed to asbestos, which subsequently caused serious injury, illness and even death. According to official sources, 434 people in Kentucky died from mesothelioma or asbestosis in the last two decades of the 20th century. The majority of these deaths were of citizens of Jefferson County, which makes sense as this is the most populated county in the state. While many mesothelioma fatalities are unavoidable, the best way to extend one’s years and quality of life is to receive a mesothelioma diagnosis in the earliest stages of the disease. For this reason, people who have been exposed to asbestos on the job or in another environment are strongly encouraged to seek routine medical check ups. For those who are worried about the health consequences of asbestos exposure, it is a good idea to contact a mesothelioma treatment center for the most comprehensive and best care possible.

Kentucky and Asbestos Exposure

Virtually all cases of mesothelioma and asbestosis in Kentucky as been from occupational exposure to asbestos, which has and continues to occur at oil refineries, natural gas plants, power plants, and the chemical and construction industries.

Asbestos containing products have been used in countless applications, including insulation, ceilings, floorings, wallboard, tiles, piping, car brakes, gaskets, and much more. While the dangers of asbestos have been long known, many companies have risked human health for profit in continuing to use products containing this extremely hazardous material.

Victims of asbestos exposure may be at risk of developing asbestos cancer. If you suffered exposure to asbestos in Kentucky, contact the Mesothelioma Treatment Centers to learn more about your legal rights.

Kentucky Mesothelioma Treatment Centers

Markey Cancer Center
800 Rose St.
University of Kentucky
Lexington, KY 40536-0293

The Markey Cancer Center was established in 1983 and is an integral part of the University of Kentucky and also the UK Healthcare enterprise.

In 2013, Markey was recognized by the National Cancer Institute to be the recipient of research funding and many other cancer funding opportunities that are only available to the best cancer centers in the US.

Markey is the only cancer center in this state that has been designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the NCI. The clinical programs and cancer services at Markey have been fully integrated with the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. The cancer specialty teams here work closely with that hospital to offer excellent cancer care and support services, and also advanced specialty care with clinical studies.

All of the center’s diagnostic services, clinical and pathology labs, intensive care, operating rooms and related radiation therapy services are provided to lung and mesothelioma cancer patients through Chandler Hospital.

Markey is one of the few cancer centers in the US that are providing multidisciplinary care via clinical care and research teams.

The Markey Cancer Center has been organized into four research programs: Cancer Cell Biology and Signaling; Cancer Prevention and Control, Drug Discovery, Delivery and Transnational Therapeutics, and Redox Injury and Repair. MCC also has eight affiliate hospitals, with four added in the last two years and is now developing a partnership with Norton Healthcare in Louisville KY.

One of the major benefits of receiving care at this cancer center is that it is dedicated to developing new treatments to fight cancer. This is done with new clinical studies. Participation in each program is voluntary and cancer patients receive new, breakthrough cancer treatments at no cost.

Because this center has been designated by NCI, it is able to bring many new clinical study opportunities to cancer patients. Because of this, patients can take advantage of many new drugs, technologies and treatments that cannot be had anywhere else in the US.

If you participate in a clinical study at Markey, you will be able to not just benefit from a possibly revolutionary cancer treatment. You also will be able to help doctors and scientists take next steps in finding new ways to treat and prevent many deadly cancers. You also will receive the highest quality care and can help others by helping in the discovery of a new or better cancer treatment.

Research has shown that many cancers are not caused by a genetic risk that is passed down in a family, but it should be noted that a higher risk of cancer can run in families. If you think that your family could have a hereditary risk of cancer, you could benefit from a unique program at Markey called the Clinical Genetic Counseling Program.

MCC also participates in the Kentucky Clinical Trials Network, which is a statewide alliance of doctors that conduct clinical studies to prevent and treat many forms of lung cancer.
