Kansas and Mesothelioma Statistics

While Kansas has a lower rate of mesothelioma fatalities compared to other US States, hundreds of Kansas residents develop this serious and usually deadly cancer each year. In fact, between the years of 1979 and 1999, over 360 people in Kansas died from mesothelioma cancer or asbestosis, which is a non-cancerous but serious lung disease also caused by asbestos. By county, more of these deaths were reported in Shawnee country, where Topeka is located.

The key to optimizing the results of treatment for mesothelioma and asbestosis is to seek early medical attention. Mesothelioma treatment centers are the best sources of care, as doctors and other helpful professionals are specially trained to help patients with this specific hard-to-treat form of cancer. Kansas and Asbestos exposure

While Kansas is primarily an agricultural state, several commercial companies have been identified as exposing employees and other residents to dangerous levels of asbestos. For example, the Environmental Working Group reported that Farmland Industries, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Company, and Frontier Oil repeatedly exposed their employees to unsafe amounts of asbestos on the job.

In 2004, asbestos abatement at the ammonia plant operated by Farmland Industries resulted in the removal of thousands of square feet of piping laden with asbestos.

Knowing exactly what chemotherapy is and how it works is key to allieve many of your fears and the possible side effects.

This cancer center uses the latest innovations in chemotherapy to provide excellent results in cancer treatment. Chemotherapy involves the use of certain drugs to kill cancer cells. Your chemotherapy could consist of a single drug or several drugs. Typically it is administered through a vein or injected into a body cavity. It also can be delivered orally. Chemotherapy is very different from radiation therapy or invasive surgery because the drugs go through your blood and body to where the cancer may have spreaded. It can therefore kill cancer cells at sites that are far from where the cancer started.

About 50% of the cancer patients at this center receive some form of chemotherapy. For many patients, their cancers will respond well to chemotherapy which allows them to enjoy a full and productive life. Also, many of the side effects that used to come with chemotherapy have been reduced a great deal, so you will better be able to work, travel and enjoy many other normal activities.

If you do experience chemotherapy side effects, remember that most of these drugs cannot tell the difference between healthy cells and cancer cells. So, chemotherapy can affect the normal tissues of your body as well as the organs. Some of the common side effects include depression, anemia, hair loss, low blood counts, mouth sores, pain, nausea and infection or fever.

The good news for many cancer patients is that progress made in the last 20 years has brought much progress in the reduction of side effects with chemotherapy.
